Working Abroad

Working AbroadFinding a job abroad isn't as simple as just looking at an international webpage.  Remember, if you plan to work in another country, you'll be competing with job seekers who are native to that country, and probably have more connections.  But that doesn't mean you shouldn't try, if working abroad is your goal.  Here are some helpful tips on how to get started, and move towards that international job.

Short Term Work Abroad

Go Overseas - started with the simple idea of creating a centralized website to provide the resources required for meaningful travel abroad. That idea has grown and expanded into what you see here, a community driven website of like minded people who are all passionate about teaching, studying and volunteering abroad. GoOverseas.com features a popular 'Help Me Find a Program' forum where users regularly discuss a wide range of travel topics, and a blog community where we have brought together a wealth of overseas travel experiences. We also regularly post insightful articles to help expand the community's knowledge about opportunities to travel abroad.

BUNAC - Well respected program sends students and recent graduates on short-term work abroad programs.

CIEE - Another fee based program which sends students and recent graduates on short-term work abroad programs.

Critical Language Scholarship Program - Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) institutes provide fully-funded group-based intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences for seven to ten weeks for U.S. citizen undergraduate, Master’s and Ph.D. students.

Camp Adventure - provide youth services to children in 20 countries world-wide, including Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Germany, Belgium, England, Italy, Russia and the United States including Hawaii.  Students' living expenses and travel are paid.  Youth programs take place during the summer and are approximately 8-10 weeks in length.

Teaching English or Teaching Opportunities

Fulbright US Student English Teaching Assistantship Program - An English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) places a Fulbrighter in a classroom abroad to provide assistance to teachers of English to non-native English-speakers. English Teaching Assistants help teach English language while serving as a cultural ambassador for U.S. culture. The age and academic level of classroom students varies by country, ranging from kindergarten to university level.

GoTeachAbroad.com - find teaching opportunities and connect with others who are interested in teaching abroad or have already gone.

ELS Language Centers - this is the only program in the NW where you can obtain CELTA credentials, the most widely recognized teaching credentials in the world. This program is based in Seattle and teaches Cambridge CELTA courses year-round.

Teach Abroad - Extensive website features job listings in several countries.

EduFind Jobs - Jobs and resources for TESOL professionals.

The Jet Programme - The Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme, now in its 24th year, is aimed at promoting grass-roots international exchange between Japan and other nations. The number of countries sending participants has risen over the years, as has the number of participants. In 2010, the Programme has welcomed 4,334 participants from 36 countries.

Fulbright Scholars Program - Prestigious scholarship to live and research abroad.

Going Global - Provides extensive country specific employment and career information. Online, unlimited access subscription database contains country career guides, corporate profiles and more than 100,000 international internship and job openings.

GraduateJobs.com - updated daily with graduate jobs from a wide range of companies worldwide.

Green Jobs International - Provides users with a continuously updated overview of various international paid jobs, internships and volunteering opportunities within the environmental, engineering and management sector.

USAJOBS - Database of national and international federal jobs.

United States of America Embassy - Search this site for job and internship positions with the US Embassy.

Worldwide NGO Directory - Provides contact information for NGOs all over the world.

The International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience - Provides students with international technical work experience.

4 International Careers & Jobs  - An international employment directory and search engine featuring reviews and web rankings of2,200 career and job sites in 200 countries.

Australia Employment - Job postings in Australia.

Euro Jobs - Job postings in Europe.

Volunteering Abroad

Peace Corps - opportunity to serve in a developing country for 27 months in areas such as education, health, agriculture, environment, youth and community development, and business/ information technology. Oregon State University Representative: Sarah Kassel (skassel@peacecorps.gov). There is also a Master's International Program available through the Peace Corps within the OSU Forestry department.

Volunteer Abroad Search - Database of a variety of volunteer abroad opportunities.

Explorations in Travel- the projects that you'll find on our site were started by people who saw a need and acted on it, by; starting a school, creating a reserve, building an animal shelter, growing organic food, etc.

Omprakash - We build partnerships with grassroots health, education, and environmental projects around the world, and connect them with volunteers, donors, and classrooms that can learn from and support their work. Volunteering is FREE!

Unite For Sight - supports eye clinics worldwide by investing human and financial resources in their social ventures to eliminate patient barriers to eye care.

GoVolunteerAbroad.com - find volunteering opportunities and see ratings from others who have volunteered at specific programs. Great research tool!

Other Resources:

Fulbright US Student Program - provides grants for individually designed study/research projects or English Teaching Assistantships.  A candidate will submit a Statement of Grant Purpose defining activities to take place during one academic year in a country outside the U.S.
